Amber Evans (Soprano, Choral Conductor)

Born: August 17, 1993 - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

The Australian soporano, composer and conductor, Amber Evans, obtained her Bachelor of Music with Honours from Queensland Conservatorium of Music of Griffith University (2011-2014); her Graduate Certificate in Music Studies from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (2015); her Master of Music degree in Choral Studies from University of Cambridge (2015-2016); her Master of Music degree in Contemporary Classical Voice from Manhattan School of Music (2016- 2018), under the tutelage of Lucy Shelton. She currently studies for her Doctorate of Musical Arts at The City University of New York (since August 2022).

As a soprano singer, Amber Evans has been Soprano 1, Tuning Fork at The Australian Voices in Brisbane (October 2010-August 2016); Soprano at St Stephens Cathedral Schola in Brisbane (March 2012-September 2015). An avid chorister and ensemble singer, she can frequently be seen singing with the Cathedral Choir at St. John the Divine, where she was recently a featured soloist in Arvo Pärt’s Miserere, Choir of St. Luke in the Fields, and the New York early music vocal group, Pomerium. She is also a featured soloist on the CD of Poul Ruders’ opera The Thirteenth Child under the Bridge Records label, released in the summer of 2019. Summer engagements have included the Cortona Sessions for New Music, Darmstadt Summer Music Festival, Melbourne International Singer’s Festival and the Contemporary Performance Institute as part of Mario Davidovsky’s Composer’s Conference. Performances for 2019 included joining the Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble for their performance season, presenting a concert of Marta Gentilucci’s works with the Talea Ensemble and Steve Reich’s Tehillim at Manhattan School of Music for the Contemporary Performance Program’s tenth anniversary celebrations.

As a choral conductor, Amber Evans has conducted performances of Australian contemporary choral works in the US, UK and Europe. Winner of the inaugural Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Advancement Award for Interpreters of Contemporary Music, she premiered over thirty new vocal works and became well-versed in modern contemporary classic works of the last few decades. She is also a featured soloist and chorusmaster on the CD of Poul Ruders’ new opera The Thirteenth Child due to be released in conjunction with the Santa Fe Opera premiere in the summer of 2019 on the Bridge Records label. She was Director of Music at All Saints Anglican Church in Brisbane (June 2021-July 2022).

Amber Evans was composer-in-residence and assistant conductor with The Australian Voices. Two choral compositions premiered by the group have been published published by Edition Peters and recorded under the Warner Classics label. While her compositions have focused exclusively on choral works, she has begun expanding her interest beyond the voice. Upcoming commissions for 2019 include a work for the Australian Flute Festival held in July each year and a new work for the C4 Vocal Ensemble for their 2020 performance season. She is Artistic Director of Formant (since August 2020).

In the field of education, Amber Evans has been Assistant teacher at Imogen Singing in Brisbane (February 2003-December 2010); GUMURRII Tutor - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program at Griffith University in Brisbane (March 2013-February 2014); English Tutor/Teacher at NumberWorks'nWords in Brisbane (March 2013-November 2014); Choral conductor at Ashgrove State School in Brisbane (July-December 2014); Choral Scholar at St John's College, University of Queensland in Brisbane (April-September 2015); Vocal Instructor at Bloomingdale School of Music in New York City (September 2018-June 2022); Vocal Instructor at Highbridge Voices in Bronx, New York (September 2018-March 2020); Assistant Conductor at The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School in in New York City (November 2019-March 2020); Vocal Instructor at Circle Circle Arts in New York City (April 2020-January 2021); ural Studies Lecturer - Young Conservatorium at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in Brisbane (December 2020-May 2022).

Amber Evans is currently based in New York City.
