Rosina Fabius (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: February 12, ____ - The Netherlands

The Dutch mezzo-soprano, Rosina Fabius, was born into a musical family. Her English grandmother was the pianist and composer, Margot Wright and her parents are professional musicians (cello and viola). From the age of 4 she took part in the family’s musical activities by playing the piano and the cello but at the age of 14 she discovered her talent for singing and decided that she wanted to become an opera singer. She graduated with Master of Music degree at the Utrecht Conservatory (2013-2017), where she studied with Henny Diemer. In the last period of her studies at the Conservatory she studied for one year at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien (MDW) in Vienna (October 2014-August 2015) with Professors Claudia Visca and Gabriele Fontana. After she finished her formal education she continued her vocal studies under the guidance of the Welsh soprano Rosemary Joshua and Romanian soprano Manuela Ochakovski. Furthermore she has taken part in master-classes by Ann Murray, Sarah Connolly and Hilary Summers. In September 2018, she was awarded the Oratorio Prize at the International Vocal Competition s’-Hertogenbosch.

During her studies Rosina Fabius has performed several operatic roles including La Messagiera in Monteverdi's L’Orfeo (Holland Opera), the title role in George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare (operaclass of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna) and at the Rotterdam Opera Days Festival (New Voices Talent Programme). After finishing her studies she made her debut at the Dutch National Opera (Opera Forward Festival) in Stefano Landi’s La morte d’Orfeo (2nd Euretto), with Les Talens Lyriques (Director: Christophe Rousset) (March 2018).

In 2014 Rosina Fabius received her first invitation to perform as soloist with the London Octave in the famous church of St Martin-in-the-Fields. She now appears regularly in their Baroque programmes. Performances of the romantic concert repertoire include Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Das Klagende Lied in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. As of today she is frequently invited as soloist in concerts and oratoria, especially those of J.S. Bach. During the first International Bach Festival in Gran Canaria (March-April 2015) she performed as soloist in Matthäus-Passion BWV 244. This unique enacted performance was broadcast on Dutch television (SBS9) and repeated in 2017 in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. She has performed several times on Dutch radio- and television, most recently with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble with whom she recorded a version of J.S. Bach’s aria Es ist Vollbracht from the Johannes-Passion BWV 245 in Hebrew.

Rosina Fabius' love for chamber music led to a collaboration with several ensembles including the Fabius Ensemble and the ARTO Ensemble which consists of mezzo soprano, clarinet, violin, viola and cello. This unique ensemble performs in an on-going chamber music series (Bunnik, the Netherlands) in which contemporary music and premières are heard alongside more classical chamber music and Lieder. In addition to the contemporary repertoire she also makes her own arrangements for both ensembles.

Together with the pianist, Kanako Inoue Rosina Fabius enjoys giving Lieder recitals. They have followed several master-classes including “Poetry and Performance of the German Lied” in 2014 at the Franz Schubert Institut (Baden, Austria) where they performed and received coaching from famous artists such as Christa Ludwig, Robert Holl and Elly Ameling. She also enjoyed singing in ensemble recitals and has performed at the Zeist International Lied Festival and the Delft Chamber Music Festival.
