Neal Ferreira (Tenor)

Born: 1980 - Providence, Rhode Island, USA

The American tenor and voice teacher, Neal Ferreira, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Providence College in 2002, graduating cum laude. While at Providence College, he studied voice with David Harper and appeared in many stage productions with both the Music and Theater Departments. He is a student of the world-renowned tenor, Frank Lopardo. He obtained his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from New England Conservatory, graduating with Academic Honors in 2005. There he studied with international opera singer Patricia Craig, and he sang the role of Tamino in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute as part of New England Conservatory Outreach Opera’s inaugural production. He is a recipient of the Roberts Music Scholarship for musical aptitude and achievement.

Neal Ferreira made his Opera Colorado debut performing Spalanzani and Andres in Les Contes d’Hoffmann (2009), roles he first performed with Boston Lyric Opera under the direction of Maestro Keith Lockhart (2008) and reprised with the Florida Grand Opera (2011). Other appearances have included Sheldon Segal in Later the Same Evening (2011) and Charlie Davenport (cover) in Annie Get Your Gun with Deborah Voigt (2011) at the Glimmerglass Festival.

The tenor received the 2013 Artist of the Year Award from Syracuse Opera, where he last performed the role of Alfred in Die Fledermaus to much acclaim (2014). He was also awarded the 2009 Stephen Shrestinian Award for Excellence from Boston Lyric Opera, with whom he has performed numerous roles over the last fifteen seasons, including Tancredi in John Musto's The Inspector (2012), Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (2009, 2013), the Gran Sacerdote in W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo (2010), re di Creta, and Snout in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, to name a few (2011).

Neal Ferreira made his Tanglewood debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the summer of 2018 in a concert performance of La bohème under the baton of Maestro Andris Nelsons. He first performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the 2016-2017 season as Ein Tierhändler in Der Rosenkavalier with Renée Fleming and Susan Graham. In October 2018, Ferreira created the role of Master Turner in the world premiere of Brother Nat, a new opera based on Nat Turner’s historic slave insurrection of 1831, with book/lyrics by Jabari Asim and Liana Asim and music by Damien Sneed and Allyssa Jones. Later that season he returned to Odyssey Opera singing the role of Giovanni D'Aire in Donizetti’s rarely heard L’assedio di Calais.

In the 2019-2020 season, Neal Ferreira starred in multiple leading roles, including Tamino in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall, as well as Macheath in Benjamin Britten's version of The Beggar's Opera with Emmanuel Music. Among his 2020-2021 performances cancelled due to the pandemic were engagements with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Odyssey Opera, Symphony New Hampshire, the Orchestra of Indian Hill, the Salisbury Singers, the Commonwealth Chorale, and Chorus North Shore (MA).

A much sought-after interpreter of new music, Neal Ferreira made his European debut in 2021, creating the role of Leartes in the world premiere of Joseph Summer's operatic Hamlet with State Opera Rousse, Bulgaria. His successful performance as the Visitor in Boston Lyric Opera’s production of Philip Glass’ In the Penal Colony was called “poignant” by the Wall Street Journal and “perfect” by Opera News. He can be heard on the premiere recordings of numerous operas, including Charles Wuorinen’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories (BMOP/Sound), Lukas Foss' The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (BMOP/Sound), James MacMillan’s Clemency (BIS), Joseph Summer’s Hamlet (Parma) and The Tempest (Albany), and Mario Castenuovo Tedesco’s The Importance of Being Earnest (Odyssey Opera).

Highlights of Neal Ferreira's 2023-2024 season included the role of Doctor in Dominick Argento’s The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe with Odyssey Opera (2024), Flavio in Norma with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (2024), Loud Stone in Matthew Aucoin’s Eurydice with Boston Lyric Opera(2024), conducted by the composer, as well as a return to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for performances of Dmitri Shostakovich's Lady MacBeth of Mtsensk (2024) at Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall (recording soon to be released on Deutsche-Grammophon).

Neal Ferreira is a nationally recognized lyric tenor known for his dynamic stage presence and cultivated vocalism. Dubbed a “Boston mainstay” by the Boston Globe, he recently appeared with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project at Jordan Hall as the French Ambassador/Kruger in their Gershwin double bill Of Thee I Sing/Let ‘Em Eat Cake (2024), and with Boston Lyric Opera as Auctioneer/Taylor in the New England premiere of Rhiannon Giddens’ and Michael Abels’ Pulitzer Prize winning opera, Omar (2023). He regularly appears with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and returns in 2025 as Gaston in Die tote Stadt.

Neal Ferreira's engagements in the current season (2024-2025) have featured Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Il Conte di Lerma in Don Carlo with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Alpheus/Ares in Mark Adamo’s Lysistrata with Odyssey Opera. Equally at home on the concert stage, this spring Ferreira will sing the tenor solos in Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Assabet Valley Mastersingers, Carmina Burana with Portsmouth Pro Musica and Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, and L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Boston Civic Symphony. In summer 2025, he will perform the role of Aubrey in Ulysses Kay’s Frederick Douglass with Odyssey Opera/BMOP, as well as Spoletta in Tosca with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, under the baton of Maestro Andris Nelsons.

As an oratorio soloist, Neal Ferreira has performed the role of Uriel in Haydn’s The Creation, (First Religious Society, Newburyport, 2008), as well as noted performances in Orff’s Carmina Burana (Newburyport Choral Society, 2009), Dvořák's The Spectre's Bride (Harvard Summer Chorus, 2019) and Stabat Mater (First Religious Society, Newburyport, 2007), J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 (Newburyport Choral Society, 2009) and Magnificat in D major BWV 243 (First Religious Society, Newburyport, 2007); W.A. Mozart's Requiem (Chorus North Shore, 2016), and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (Emmanuel Music, 2015) throughout the New England area. He is a regular guest soloist at his alma mater, Providence College, where he most recently appeared in George Frideric Handel's Messiah and Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ with the Providence College Orchestra and Chorus.

In addition to performing, Neeal Ferreira is an avid voice pedagogue He also was Voice Teacher at Be Imagine Music Studio in Haverhill, Massachusetts (2019-2021) and at North Shore Montessori School in Rowley, Massachusetts (2019-2021). He has served as an Assistant Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music since 2021. He served on the Voice Faculty of his alma mater from 2021-and has returned several times as a guest artist to perform in recital. He currently lives in Lives in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
