Benjamin Ferriby (Bass-Baritone)

Born: June 30, 1998 - Ulsan, South Korea

The Korean-American bass-baritone, Benjamin Ferriby, began playing piano by ear at the age of 3 and shortly thereafter enrolled in private study. This early affinity for music was nurtured throughout his time at the Saint Thomas Choir School in New York City, New York, where he enrolled at the age of 9. It was during this time that he began to foster a deep admiration for vocal repertoire, performing daily with the internationally renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, then under the music direction of John G. Scott, at Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue. As a high school senior he sang with the Yale Camerata and the Camerata Chamber Singers under the direction of Marguerite L. Brooks.

Benjamin Ferriby obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from DePauw University (2016-2020), where he studied voice with Kerry Lee Jennings and Italian Cultural Studies with Francesca Seaman; and his Master of Music degree from Yale University (2020-May 2022), where he studied voice with James Taylor and performed in master-classes with Masaaki Suzuki, Nicholas McGegan, and Roderick Williams. He is a recipient of the Margot Fassler Prize in the Performance of Sacred Music (Yale University, 2022). He has also trained at the Tanglewood Institute.

Previous seasons have included performances in notable venues throughout the UK, Germany, and the USA under the baton of notable conductors such as Marguerite Brooks, Gabriel Crouch, Jeffrey Douma, Matthew Halls, David Hill, Ann Howard Jones, Nicholas McGegan, James O’Donnell, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Kathy Romey, John Scott, Masaaki Suzuki, André Thomas, Michael Tilson Thomas, and others. He can be heard on the Hyperion and Resonus labels. He currently lives in Hamden, Connecticut.
