Jean Fisher (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: April 21, 1918 - Lewiston, Idaho, USA
Died: November 2, 2006 - McCloud, California, USA

The American mezzo-soprano, Dorothy Jean (Briggs) Fisher, was born in n Lewiston, Idaho on April 21, 1918, moved to Portland, Oregon area, and at age 12 to Woodstock, New York. She attended Middlebury College in Vermont, where she settled after graduation with a degree in mathematics. There she met, and in 1941 married, Dr. Robert W. Rafuse, a Professor of Political Science. In 1950, they moved to Binghamton, where she lived until 1998. She lost her husband to cancer in 1957, and in 1961, married George M. Fisher, a Vice President of Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company. His death came suddenly in 1982 while skiing.

Jean Fisher was a professional singer and an engaged member of her community. She was active in her church, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society, WSKG Public Radio, Harpur College (now Binghamton University) Faculty Wives Club, in addition to other community-oriented work. She was also a homemaker and raised four children. She passed away in Weed, California, on November 2, 2006, at the age of 88.
