The American Baroque oboe and recorder player, Curtis Foster, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine/Studio Arts, Music from Wichita State University (2004); his Master of Music degree in Early Music - Oboe from Indiana University Bloomington's Early Music Institute (2004-2008), where his principle teachers: were Washington McClain, Eva Legêne, and Han Toll. He also has Certificate in Band Instrument Repair Technology from Renton Technical College (2020-2021).
Curtis Foster, whose playing has been praised for its “brilliantly introverted charm” (Seattle Times), has appeared with many of North America’s most respected early music ensembles, including Handel & Haydn Society, Les Boréades de Montréal, Seattle Baroque Orchestra (since 2011; principlal oboe since October 2017), Pacific Baroque Orchestra (since 2008), and Victoria Baroque Players. He has also performed with Portland Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Arion Baroque Orchestra, Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Marin Baroque, and Baroque Music Montana.
In the summer, Curtis Foster can typically be found performing or teaching at various festivals, including the San Francisco Early Music Society’s Baroque workshop, Oregon Bach Festival, Vancouver Bach Festival, Victoria Baroque Instrumental Academy, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and Whidbey Island Music Festival.
An enthusiastic advocate for music of our own time, Curtis Foster regularly commissions and presents new works by contemporary composers for old instruments. In demand as a pedagogue and mentor, he has taught Baroque oboe as part of the Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme at the University of British Columbia, and is regularly invited to present workshops and master-classes around the USA and Canada. He can be heard on recordings from ATMA Classique, Naxos, Cedille Records, and IU Press.
In February 2022, Curtis Foster was appointed Executive Director of Lyra Baroque in St. Paul's, Minnesota. He currently lives in Dallas, Texas. |
