The Hungarian bass-baritone, Máté Fülep, began his studies in his hometown Miskolc, at the Bartók Béla Zeneművészeti Szakközépiskolában, where he also graduated in with honours, and then obtained his diploma as a singer and teacher at the Debreceni Egyetem Zeneművészeti Karán (Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen) (2004-2009). Two years later, he went on pursue an Master of Arts degree in Opera Singing at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He has participated in numerous master-classes, among others with Adrienne Csengery and Éva Marton.
From 2005, Máté Fülep was a member of the Debreceni Csokonai Színház (Debrecen Csokonai Theatre) for six years, where his soloist career also began. In 2009, he made his debut at the Szegedi Nemzeti Színházban (Szeged National Theatre) with the title role in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. In 2015, he was invited to sing the role of Eustachio in Donizetti's I pazzi per progetto, with which he successfully debuted at the Hungarian State Opera, where he has been a soloist ever since.
Máté Fülep has sung in the Netherlands Radio Choir and also in the Hungarian National Choir. He was member of the Dutch National Opera for several years. Since 2015, he has been a returning guest of the Hungarian State Opera and the Festival Theatre. In the years 2016-2018, he featured as Bagó in Pongrác Kacsóh’s János Vitéz, as Dancaïre in Georges Bizet's Carmen, as Mathieu in Giordano’s verist opera Andrea Chénier, as Biberach in Erkel’s Bánk bán, or as De Retz in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, or as Jake in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. At the 2018 Armel Competition, he sang as the only Hungarian finalist in Péter Eötvös' opera: Lady Sarashina. The Müpa audience got to know him in 2020 at the head of the National Philharmonic, at the Hungarian premiere of Daniel Schnyder's play. In 2021, at the invitation of the Hungarian Opera in Cluj, he played Papageno in W.A. Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte. He is a regular performer at the concerts of the Capella Savaria (Savaria Baroque Orchestra) conducted by Pál Németh. He enjoys performing in all musical genres, so his repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary music. In the spring of 2022, he sang the baritone solo in Attila Bozay's Symphony No. 3 with the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra, thus expanding his contemporary music repertoire. Since then, he has performed numerous contemporary works by composers such as Péter Eötvös, Máté Hollós, Lajos Huszár, Barnabás Horváth, György Selmeczi and Viktor Togobickij. In the fall of 2025, the opera Bánk bán debuted at the National Theatre of Pécs in the roles of Petúr and Tiborc.
