Mercedes Gancedo (Soprano)

Born: March 18, 1990 - Banfield, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Argentine soprano and vocal coach, Mercedes Ximena Gancedo, obtained her License in Lyrical Singing from Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón (2008-2011). She made her debut at the age of 18 in the role of despina in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte at Teatro Roma in Buenos Aires. Trained with Jaume Aragall, Teresa Berganza, Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballé, and Cecilia Bartoli, among others, Winner of the “Young artistic promise of international character” award from the Association of Critics of the Argentine Republic and the “Teresa Grüneisen” scholarship from the Mozarteum Foundation to study abroad, she also received a scholarship to pursue the Lied Master’s degree “Victoria de los Ángeles” At the ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) in Barcelona (2016-2017), as well as the Bach scholarship, among others. She has also been awarded at the Competizione dell’Opera in Dresden, Germany, Francisco Viñas Competition in Barcelona, Spain, and with the “Primer Palau Prize” granted by the Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona, Spain), in addition to other national and international competitions.

Mercedes Gancedo has performed operatic roles such as Elle in Francis Poulenc's La Voix humaine, Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Mariana Das Liebesverbot, Berta Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Oberto in George Frideric Handel's Alcina, Prilepa in Pikovaya Dama, Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, Papagena in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore, Beniamino in Giuseppe Riconosciuto, Chocholka in The Cunning Little Vixen, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, Clarina La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Micaela in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Kate Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Condesa di Ceprano in Rigoletto, Giannetta in L'Elisir d'amore at the Gran Teatre del Liceu; and Coralina in El Potosí Submarino at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, in addition to other productions in theaters such as the Teatro Real de Madrid, Festival Castell de Peralada, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Theater am Delphi (Berlin), Teatro Jovellanos in Gijón, under the Baton of maestros Gustavo Dudamel, Marc Minkowski, Dani Espasa, Dmitri Jurowski, Riccardo Frizza, Ivor Bolton, Josep Pons, Enrico Delamboye, Daniel Montané, among others.

Mercedes Gancedo combines her operatic work with an intense Lied and symphonic activity, including Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Felix Mendelssohn;s a Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others. She has participated in major festivals and venues such as the Schubertiade of Vilabertran, the Oxford Lieder Festival, Life Victoria Festival, Machynlleth Moma Festival in Wales, Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival, Palau de la Música Catalana, l’Auditori of Barcelona, and the Fundación Juan March in Madrid. Together with pianist Beatriz Miralles, she recorded her debut album in 2017: "Cooking America!" and recently released her latest recording Guastavino Dixit with Quimey Urquiaga.

In the field of educatioin, Mercedes Gancedo has taught at A Tempo in Barcelona (January 2012-January 2016); at Cantabile in Barcelona (January 2016-January 2018); and at All' Opera (since January 2018). She is founding director of Dar Voz in Barcelona (2020), where she helps people develop their vocal potential to the fullest and find their identity through their voice.
