The English tenor and violist, James Gant, became at the tender age of 9 he chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was passed up for the position of head chorister. After a gap year spent singing as a lay clerk at Merton College, Oxford, he arrived at St John’s reading Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion. He switched after his first year to studying Human, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree (2020-2023). He obtained his Master of Philosophy degree in Politics and International Relations from the same institute (October 2023-June 2024).
During his studies at Cambridge, James Gant was Associate Editor of Cambridge Journal of Human Behaviour (October 2021-July 2023), a new undergraduate and postgraduate journal of psychology, political science, and behavioural science. When not singing with the Gents of St. John's (2020-2024), he could be found playing the viola, and is proud to be a founding member of the Cambridge University Viola Orchestra, headquartered at the Maypole, the local pub. He also dabbles in musical theatre, with commentators of his role as Tony in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story delivering such high praise as ‘the cracks weren’t really noticeable’, and ‘you recovered well’. He also played the prestigious role of ‘2nd Lamb’ in the MCS Junior School production of the Nativity scene. Critics described his performance as ‘electrifying’. He also sang (tenor) and played (viola) in performance of J.S. Bach's Cantatas BWV 61 & BWV 18 with Trinity College Music Society at Trinity College Chapel (January 2023). |
