Leonhard Geiger (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Freiburg Im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The German bass-baritone, Leonhard Geiger, gained his first musical experience as a boy soloist with the Freiburger Domsingknaben. He later studied musicology and linguistics in his hometown, accompanied by private singing studies with Richard Levitt in Basel. From 2011 to 2016 he studied singing with Professor Hanno Müller-Brachmann at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, as well as opera at the Institut für Musiktheater there, where he also received lessons from Professor Julia Varady. He sang in university productions, among others. Roles like the Ottone in Monteverdi's L‘Incoronazione di Poppea, Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and the Schaunard in Puccini's La Bohème. Since October 2018 he has been studying singing Master Lied with Professor Turid Karlsen and Professor Cornelis Witthoefft at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart. At the same time, he continued his training with Hartmut Elbert in Munich. He is a scholarship holder of the Richard-Wagner-Verbandes Baden-Baden/Pforzheim. He deepened his training in master-classes with Margreet Honig, Emma Kirkby, Rudolf Piernay, Thomas Hampson, Peter Kooy, Olaf Bär, Georg Nigl and others. In summer 2015 he won the 2nd Prize at the Internationalen Bach-Wettbewerb in Greifswald. He is also a prize winner of the 2018 Wettbewerbs der Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, where he played Ottokar in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz. In September 2020, he was winner of the Sacred Music International Competition (15th edition).

Leonhard Geiger works regularly with various well-known ensembles such as the Gaechinger Cantorey (Director: Hans-Christoph Rademann), Vocalensemble Rastatt & Les Favorites Barockorchester (Director: Holger Speck) and Solistenensemble Stimmkunst (Director: Kay Johannsen). As part of the a cappella quartet Rasselbande, he dedicates himself to a repertoire that ranges from German folk songs to modern times.

With the Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe Leonhard Geiger was a guest at the Internationalen Händel-Festspiele in 2017 and 2018. He has already worked with conductors such as Helmuth Rilling, Howard Arman, Christopher Molds and Hans-Christoph Rademann as well as with directors such as Peter Konwitschny and Floris Visser. This year (2021) there are many exciting projects waiting for him. He will be heard with Alessandro De Marchi and the Bayerischen Kammerphilharmonie in a concert version of George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare in the role of Achilla. At the Schlossfestspielen Ettlingen he will be seen as Dr. Falke in Strauss' Fledermaus. Hae currently lives in Stuttgart, Germany.
