The American soprano, Marie Gibson, opened, for three consecutive years, the season of the Los Angeles Opera Company. In recent years (as of 1963) she took lead roles in Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, La Traviata, and Ariadne auf Naxos, and in 1963 sang Marion and La Boheme when the Los Angeles Opera Company opened in the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on February 23, 1963.
In addition to the Los Angeles Opera Company, Marie Gibson was soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, appeared twice in the Hollywood Bowl, and from the late 1950’s to the late 1960’s was soprano soloist at the Carmel Bach Festival, considered by many authorities to be the outstanding festival group devoted to the performance of Baroque music in America. She appeared in three Broadway musicals, and was seen on local and network television in performances of popular, light classical mussic, and more serious music. Her recordings are on the Capitol label. |
