The Belgian tenor, Leander Van Gijsegem, took his first singing class with his mother, Belgian soprano Diane Verdoodt. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in English Linguistics and literature (2006-2012), he enrolled in the Royal Conservatory in Ghent for classical singing with French bass-baritone Marcos Pujol (2014-2019). In addition, he is taking classes with the Belgian tenor Ludwig van Gijsegem and the Dutch tenor Marcel Reijans. He obtained his Master of Education degree in Music - Classical Singing also from the Royal Conservatory in Ghent (2018-2020)
Leander Van Gijsegem has an ecclectic repertoire, and has played – amongst others – the following roles: Aeneas in Henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, Guido Contini in Maury Yeston's Nine, Testo and Tancredi in Claudio Monteverdi's Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Soldato I in Claudio Monteverdi's L’incoronazione die Poppea, L’Arithmétique and La Théière in M. Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges, Hans in Leon Jessel's Schwarzwaldmädel, Brissac in Louis Varney's Les mousquetaires au couvent, Robert in Henri Christiné's Dédé, Abraham in Benjamin Britten's Abraham & Isaac, Don Chisciotte in Francesco Bartolomeo Conti's Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena, Il Contino Belfiore in W.A. Mozart's La finta Giardiniera, Eisenstein in Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus, Le Pêcheur in Igor Stravinsky's Le Rossignol and Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
In the previous years, Leander Van Gijsegem could be heard as soloist in W.A. Mozart's Requiem, as well as in several of his masses, the Vespro della Beata Vergine by Monteverdi, Georg Philipp Telemann's Lukas-Passion 1744, J.S. Bach's entire Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) as well as his Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthaüs-Passion (BWV 244). His passion for storytelling comes to full bloom in staged roles, as well as in the narrative oratorio repertoire.
Over the last few years, Leander Van Gijsegem has joined amongst others Ensemble Ex Tempore (Director: Florian Heyerick), Les Goût Authenthiques (Director: Jan Devlieger), the Vlaams Radio Koor (Director: Bart Van Reyn) and Pandora˛. |
