Zofia Hanna (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Antwerp, Belgium

The Beligian-Dutch mezzo-sorano, Zofia Hanna, obtained her Master's degree in Music from Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen (2005-2010); and her Master of Opera degree in Opera from Dutch National Opera Academy (2015-2017), where she sung roles like Donna Elvira in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, the title role of Massenet’s Cendrillon, the leading role Clara in the modern opera The Mother of Black-Winged Dreams by Hanna Kulenty and Gertrud in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. Besides this she had the opportunity to explore other roles like W.A. Mozart’s Cherubino and Dorabella, Massenet’s Charlotte, and other in concerts for The Concertgebouw and Dutch National Opera, where she was also invited to sing the role of Madrigalist in Puccini's Manon Lescaut. In October 2017, she was awarded 1st prize at the 3rd International “Toscanini” Competition in Brescia, Italy. That’s same year she was invited back at Opera Vlaanderen to sing Blumenmädchen in Parsifal, a revival which was awarded by Opernwelt as best production.

Zofia Hanna is a freelance mezzo-soprano since 2009, participating in various concerts and performances and master-classes. She performed Mercédes in Georges Bizet's Carmen production of Musichall in various halls in Belgium and the Netherlands (2019), as well as Lady Macbeth in a rewritten version of Verdi’s Macbeth, by M. Coppens in a special children’s production for Opera Vlaanderen. In London she joined the Alvarez Young Artist program of Garsington Opera where she worked with conductors Jac van Steen, Justin Doyle, Laurence Cummings and directors Paul Curran and Martin Duncan. Other roles in the UK have been Wellgunde in Das Rheingold (2020) with Tarnhelm opera, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor (2022), Flora in La Traviata and La Frugola (2024) in Il Tabarro with Instant Opera. She performed Second wood sprite in an exciting new production by Alan Lucien Øyen in Opera Vlaanderen (2020), recently awarded "Best Opera Company" and the roles of Marthe, Schuld and Maria Aegyptiaca under the baton of Philippe Herreweghe in Robert Schumann's Faust (2023). She sang the role of Karolka in the renowned Robert Carsen production of Jenufa (2024) for which she received great recognition in international press.

Zofia has been touring in a new theatre production "Vake Poes", singing excerpts of J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, in various cities (o.a. Opera Ghent, Opera de Lille, ITA, Théatre de la Ville Paris) in Europe. She has given the Lied recitals "A Few Words on the Soul" with Mathias Coppens (Richard Wagner, Henri Duparc Mathias Coppens; since October 2021) and "Into The Fire" (Richard Strauss, since April 2023). In August 2025, she sang the role of Blumenmädchen 5 in R.Wagner's Parsifal conducted by Alego Perez at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen/ She also sings alto in the Brussels-based Vlaams Radio Koor (Current Director: Bart Van Reyn). Upcoming she will record a new song cycle written by Mathias Coppens, which is part of a recital program "A Few Words on the Soul" that she performs together with Mathias in various cities in Europe.
