The American soprano and voicea teacher, Katelyn Lee, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (2005-2009); and her her Master of Music degree in Voice from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (2009-2011)
Recognized by Chicago Classical Review as having a “beautifully bright” and “silvery” tone, Katelyn Lee is making her mark in Chicago and across the USA. Known for her ability to sing numerous styles with ease, she is regularly sought after to perform opera, art song, musical theatre, and oratorio. This versatility has provided her with the opportunity to collaborate with notable arts organizations across the country.
Katelyn Lee has performed numerous opera and musical theatre roles, including the title role in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. She has sung in multiple productions at Lyric Opera of Chicago (since August 2016) and other companies such as Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Haymarket Opera Company (August-September 2018), Chicago Opera Theater, Ozarks Lyric Opera, Cedar Rapids Opera (December 2014-July 2015), and Chicago Folks Operetta (June-August 2014). Notable roles include Romilda in George Frideric Handel's Serse, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Doris Parker in Charlie Parker's Yardbird, Antonia in Man of La Mancha, Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein's Candide, Madame Goldentrill in The Impresario, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, and the Female Narrator in the world premiere of Jason and the Argonauts.
In concert, Katelyn Lee has sung a wide variety of repertoire. She is an expert in Baroque performance practice and is a frequent soloist with Music of the Baroque (since October 2014)), led by world-renowned conductor, Dame Jane Glover. Recently with Music of the Baroque, she sang the role of Angel in G.F. Handel's Jephtha. In April 2023, she performed the role of Nellie Forbush in concert with the New Philharmonic Orchestra alongside Nathan Gunn and Ann Harada. Other credits include Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (December 2014-December 2015), Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, Northwest Indiana Symphony, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra, and Chicago a cappella. She also was Soprano Section Leader at St. Michael in Old Town (October 2014-October 2016); and a member of Schola Choir at Episcopal Church of the Atonement (October 2016-May 2021).
In the education field, Katelyn Lee has served as Associate Instructor of Voice at Indiana University Bloomington (August 2009-May 2014); Voice and Piano Instructor at Academy of Music and Art (September 2014-September 2015); Voice Teacher at Music Institute of Chicago (August 2018-August 2022); She serves as Adjunct Professor of Voice at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago (since January 2022).
As a lover of the arts, Katelyn Lee strongly believes in educating communities about the necessity of classical music in the society. She is proud to have performed operatic roles at several outreach organizations, including Lyric Unlimited and Opera for the Young (August 2018-August 2019). It is her honor and privilege to support this cause. She is currently based in Chicago and lives with her husband and tenor, Joe Shadday, son, Sullivan, and cat, Liza. She is a proud Midwesterner, originally hailing from Springfield, Missouri. |
