The American baritone, James Chishin (C.S.) Liu (Chinese: 劉其欣), obtained his Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree in Biochemical Sciences, graduated magna cum laude, from Harvard University (1985-1989). During his studies there, he participated in Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus, was producer, controlman and announcer in the Classical Music department at the radio station (WHRB), baritone in a town-gown chorus, premed doobie. He continued his studies at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree (1989-1993). During his studies, he was member of Rutgers Universitiy Choir, Rutgers Collegium Musicum, Rutgers Concert Choir. He did research rotation and rotation in Surgical Oncology at the National Institutes of Health; sang in the National Cathedral Men's Choir over one summer.
After his studies, James Liu has been employed as Resident Physician, Internal Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center (June 1993-Jun 1996); Postdoctoral Fellow, Medical Informatics at Yale University School of Medicine (July 1996-June 1998); Health-Teaching Fellow at Yale-China Association (July 1998-June 1999); Attending Physician at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (December 1999-April 2018); Physician at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (since April 2018).
James Liu is a physician who has announced and produced classical music programming at WHRB, and sings with the semi-professional choir Cantata Singers since September 2008, including Chorus Vice President (2011-2013), Chorus President (2013-2015), Board Member (since 2015). He has sung with the Choir of First Church in Boston (September 2010-2019) and with King's Chapel Choir in Boston (since 2019). He has appeared with Indian Hill Music, Lowell House Opera, Harvard Early Music Society, Opera del West, Longwood Opera, NEMPAC, Boston Opera Collaborative, and Opera Boston. Roles include W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (Second Man in Armour, Papageno), W.A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (Antonio, Bartolo, Almaviva), W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (Guglielmo, Alfonso), Verdi's Otello (Montano) and Falstaff (Pistola), Ariadne auf Naxos (Music Teacher), L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio (Don Fernando), Orpheus in the Underworld (Jupiter), and John Eccles's Semele (Jupiter). In August 2021, he returned to public singing with Opera51 in Boston, having appeared in their productions of Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette (Capulet), Fledermaus (Falke), Amahl and the Night Visitors (King Balthasar), C. Gounod's Faust (Valentin), and Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel (The Father). He is indebted to his voice teacher, Frank Kelley, and to his infinitely patient wife, his real-life Papagena, who makes all of this possible. |
