The American baritone, David Thomas Mather, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance with a Minor in Theatre from DePauw University (2015-2019); his Master of Music degree in Historical Performance, Voice (2020-2021) and a Graduate Performance Diploma in Chamber Music in Chamber Music (2021-2022) from the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
David Thomas Mather embraces a wide body of repertoire, including early Baroque, German Lieder, and musical theatre, drawing inspiration from classical and contemporary styles in his singing. A professional chorister in Boston, he sings regularly with groups including Emmanuel Music, the Boston Camerata, Boston Opera Collaborative, and the BYSO, among others. In addition, he holds a bass section leader position at Trinity Church in Copley Square. He has given concerts for audiences in North America and Europe, performing at venues including the Notre Dame Cathedral and La Madeleine in Paris. Other chorus credits include appearances with Lowell House Opera, the Utah Symphony Chorus, and the Grand Teton Music Festival Chorus.
David Thomas Mather enjoys an active solo career, most recently featured in Orff's Carmina Burana, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J.S. Bach's Cantatas BWV 106, BWV 140, and John Eccles' Macbeth. His opera credits include the titular role and the Sailor in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Le Roi/Le Surintendent in Massenet's Cendrillon, Frank Maurrant in Street Scene, and Friedrich Bhaer in Little Women. David also regularly performs musical theater; staged productions include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Pirelli), Sister Act, Young Frankenstein (Frederick), Company (Robert), SPAMALOT!, The Addams Family Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Beauty and the Beast. He has been featured in master-classes with early music specialists Joel Frederiksen, Anne Azéma, and Ryan Turner, as well as Broadway icons Laura Bell Bundy, Alice Ripley, Laura Osnes, and Marla Mindelle. He has been pleased to work collaboratively with modern opera composers like Christopher Theofanidis, Mark Adamo, and Bright Sheng, as well as premiere pieces by Jennifer Higdon, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Jonathan David.
When David Thomas Mather isn't singing, you can find him doing theater tech at Symphony Hall, playing puzzle and board games, and mixing cocktails at home. He currently studies with baritone Tyler Duncan. He currently lives in Boston, Massachusetts. |
