The Spanish-Catalan bass-baritone, Tomàs Maxé, began his musical studies at the Escolania de Montserrat (1982-1986), conducted by Ireneu Segarra. He continued his studies at the Conservatori Superior Municipal de Música (2003-2007) and the Conservatori del Liceu de Barcelona (2012), taking Sound Technician studies and Teaching Career at the same time. He studied singing with Pau Bordas and Dalmau Gonzalez, Carlos Chausson; master-class with Kurt Widmer and Lied with Dolors Aldea; and chamber music with Peter Phillips and Bruno Turner. His solid choir training led him to win the 1st Prize at the 44th edition of the Concurso Permanente de Juventudes Musicales de España in 1995 with ensemble Musica Reservata de Barcelona.
Tomàs Maxé has sung under conductors Graeme Jenkins, Jordi Casas, Arthur Fagen, Jean-Marc Andrieu, Manel Valdivieso, Lluís Vila, Peter Phillips, Bruno Turner or Andrew Carwood. He has also worked closely with specialist ensembles of early music like Musica Ficta, Capella de Ministrers, Voces de Al Ayre Español, Tasto Solo, Ratas del Viejo Mundo (since 2017), Graindelavoix (since 2006), Cappella Amsterdam, Musica Reservata de Barcelona (since 1991), Harmonia del Parnàs, The Josquin Circle, Club Medieval, Resonet, Ars Nova Barcelona (since 2015), La Xantria. Although he is a specialist in ancient music, his repertoire also includes contemporary music. He loves, including to sing as counter-tenor in some performances, to experiment and to be involved in many different projects with dancers, puppets, circus and film artists, like Venus & Adonis by John Blow (La Cònica/Lacònica puppets), Cesena (Rosas and Graindelavoix) Outlandish cine-concert (Graindelavoix), and Šumava (circus artists and Ratas del Viejo Mundo).
As soloist Tomàs Maxé has sung Carl Orff's Carmina Burana; George Frideric Handel's Messiah; Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri; J.S. Bach's Cantatas and the role of Jesus in Johannes-Passion BWV 245 and Matthäus-Passion BWV 244; Jesus in Reinhard Keiser's Markus-Passion; W.A. Mozart's Thamos, König in Ägypten, Missa Solemnis, Coronation Mass and Requiem; J. Haydn's Die sieben letzten worte unseres erlösers am kreuze; Robert Schumann's Requiem für Mignon; Gabriel Fauré's Requiem; Maurice Duruflé's Requiem; Felix Mendelssohn's Magnificat, Salm 115 Op. 31; Georg Philipp Telemann's Cantata TWV1:58; Stockhaussen's Stimmnun; Kurt Weill's Der Ozeanflug. He has also performed as Avi Castellet in Martínez i Valls's Cançó d'Amor i de Guerra; Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona; Sargente in Puccini's La Bohème; Dido in H. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

Tomàs Maxé has made more than 30 recordings for companies such as Cantus, Glossa, Enchiriadis, Klara, Ramée, Columna Música or and La mà de Guido; and for radios such as Radio Nacional de España, Group Radio France or Catalunya Música. He currently lives in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. |
