This Colombian counter-tenor, Sergio Monsalve Cervantes, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance the Universidad Central de Bogotá (January 2012-June 2017). In 2016, he won first prize at the Colombian National Singing Competition. He obtained his Master's degree in Vocal Performance from the Conservatori Liceu in 2018 and in Chamber Music (Sep 2017-May 2019).
Sergio Monsalve Cervantes was singer of the Choir of the Opera of Colombia, and participated in performance of professional opera productions (January 2013-December 2016). He participated in various opera productions and professional symphonic concerts on the most important stages of his country. His debut in Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Oberon) by the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016 was a great success. He also sang, among other works, L.v. Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and the oratorio Voices of Light at the Julio Mario Santodomingo Theater and The Emerald Table at the Luis Ángel Arango Concert Hall. Commissioned by the Banco de la República de Colombia, he sang the operas Gianni Schicchi by Puccini (Gherardino), The Elements by Literes (Fire), Figaro by Mercadante (Cherubino), an opera workshop at the Central University, and Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel (Hänsel) at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá. He was also Choir Singer (Coro Filarmonico Juvenil) with Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá (June 2014-June 2017).
In 2019, Sergio Monsalve received a scholarship to participate in the International Baroque Academy in Germany and recently sang as a soloist during concerts in Germany, Austria, France, and Spain, including Dido and Aeneas (The Sorceress) and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms in Montpellier. In 2018, he received the prize for best performer of early music at the Josep Palet singing competition in Martorell, Spain. Recently, he was part of the cast of the music program Això no és una cançó on Catalan television.
Sergio Monsalve is currently studying early music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Xenia Meijer (since September 2023). In November 2025, ge was selected by the Dutch National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam as an extra singer for upcoming productions. Participating as a singer in the choir in Operas, rehearsals and projects as needed.
Sergio Monsalve combines his career as a professional choral and solo singer with over 8 years of experience teaching singing, music, and Spanish to students of all ages. He has been Freelance Voice and Music Teacher (private students) in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain (since October 2014); Music Teacher to kids | Spanish as a Foreign Languge (SFL) at Universidad Central (CO) (January 2013-December 2016); Music Teacher for Children at Escuela de Musica Musicart in Barcelona (2021). |
