The American mezzo-soprano, Ashley Mulcahy, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian Language & Literature and her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan (2010-2014), where she studied with Carmen Pelton. She is a graduate of the Voxtet Program (Master of Music degree: 2017-2019) at the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music, which provides four students each year a full scholarship to study early music, oratorio, and chamber music. At Yale, she studied with James Taylor and had the opportunity to work with many internationally renowned conductors, including Nicholas McGegan, Masaaki Suzuki, David Hill, and Simon Carrington.
Ashley Mulcahy is active as a solo and ensemble singer (since September 2015). Favorite performances include alto solos in George Frideric Handel's Alexander’s Feast, J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, and J. Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with Juilliard 415, and the title role in Alessandro Scarlatti's Caino, ovvero il primo omicidio. In past seasons, she has performed with ensembles including Bach Collegium Japan, Theatre of Voices, Newberry Consort, Parthenia Viol Consort, Henry Purcell Society of Boston, and the Blue Hill Bach Festival.
Additionally, Ashley Mulcahy co-directs her own ensemble, Lyracle (since January 2018), dedicated to repertoire for voice and viol family instruments. Lyracle’s non-composer-centric approach to concert programming has earned it recognition as an emerging ensemble in the field. Presenters include the Howard M. Brown International Early Music Series, the Academy of Early Music, and Early Music Missouri. Lyracle has been invited to perform and present on their work at university campuses including the University of Chicago, UMASS Amherst, Brandeis University, and UNC Chapel Hill.
In the 2024-2025 season, Ashley Mulcahy sings with the Boston Early Music Festival, Pegasus Early Music, New York State Baroque, Lyracle, Upper Valley Baroque, Ensemble Altera, Handel & Haydn Society, True Concord, and Bach Cantata Series at Marsh Chapel.
Ashley Mulcahy is particuarly interested in opportunities that combine her interests in the arts and humanities, and she enjoys writing for Early Music America on a freelance basis. She is currently based in Boston. |
