The Welsh tenor, Steffan [Stephen] Mullan, studied singing at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff (1986-1988: Part Time Vocal Scholarship With Beatrix Unsworth, Voice and Opera); and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1989-1993: AGSM Performers Course, Voice and Opera, Performance Skills, Languages, Teaching and Coaching Diploma).
Steffan Mullan started his career at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (February 1994-October 1998) and subsequently at Teatro alla Scala in Milano (January 1999-February 2010), where he sang comprimario roles and in the chorus for over fifteen years. He became a freelance solo artist in 2010 and later started performing on board the cruise ships of Costa Crosiere (March 2014-July 2016) and Crystal Luxury Cruises (July 2016-February 2022), specializing in classical and musical theatre, making concert appearances on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
Also in 2010, Steffan Mullan made his professional house debut at the National Theatre of Opera Tirana as Prince Sigismondo in the world premiere of La Vita è Sogno by David Tukiçi and returned to Tirana the following year for Calaf in Turandot. Other career highlights include Ruggerio in La Rondine at Melbourne City Opera, Alfredo in La traviata at the Atelier de L’Opera in Barcelona, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Operaimas Sant Cugat in Barcelona, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana with the Salzburg Voice Festival, Radames in Aida with Opera de Sabadell, Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Opera Panamá, the title role of Il Fantastico Cavaliere Don Chisciotte della Mancia by Matteo Fania at the Teatro Sanchinarro Madrid, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera with the L'opera lirica Tamagno in Turin, Don José in Georges Bizet's Carmen with North West Opera Ireland, and Canio in I Pagliacci at the State Opera Varna in Bulgaria.
A regular oratorio and concert artist, Steffan Mullan has sung numerous works, including George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, which he performed with the L’Orchestra Nacionál de Cuba at Teatro Amadeo Roldán in Havana as well as for the Vatican Concert Series for Pope Benedict XVI’s birthday at the basilica San Giovanni in Laterano. Other notable performances include Benjamin Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings at the Sala Verdi in Milano, the TV-Gala concert New Tang Dynasty with Marcello Giordano at Carnegie Hall and a concert with Jaume Aragall at the Circulo del Liceu.
Most recent performances include the Brahms-Saal of Vienna’s Musikverein with Virtuosi Brunenses in an Italian opera gala concert for Opera Classica Europa and 125 Anniversary of the Wiener Prater Wheel with the Phantom of the Opera. In November 2022 he staged all 20 songs of Robert Schumann in his Ritter-Dichterliebe Projekt and the Liszt Petrarca Sonnets at the Borromeussaal in Vienna. Since 2023 he has performed regularly onboard the Riverside Mozart, performed all over Germany with the Johann Strauss Operette Wien and in May 2024 participated in the masterclass with Aprile Millo with whom he continued to study.
Steffan Mullan also sang and danced alongside Ewan McGregor in Cole Porter’s musical Out of this World and took part in Franco Zeffirelli’s film Tea with Mussolini, starring Maggie Smith, Judy Dench, and Cher. |
