Ki-Hyun Park (Bass)

Born: Seoul, South Korea

The Korean bass, Ki-Hyun Park, began his studies at the Gachun University in Seoul and completed them under Professor Waldemar Wild at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock, under Professor Kammersänger Jürgen Hartfiel at the Hochschule für Musik "Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden and at the Arena Accademia di Musica in Rome. He has attended master-classes with James Wagner, Claudia Eder and Bonaldo Giaiotti, among others. In 2003 he won the Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary as well as the Interpretation Prize, Mozart Prize and Special Prize of the National Theater in Prague.

Ki-Hyun Park is a member of the Oper Halle since the 2002-2003 season. At the Halle Opera he acquired an extensive repertoire that ranges from Monteverdi to W.A. Mozart, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Luigi Dallapiccola. His most important roles include the title roles in Des Kaisers neue Kleider and Georg Philipp Telemann's Der geduldige Socrates, Commendatore in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Papageno and Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Hermit in Bad Lauchstadt’s Freischütz, Sir Berkley and Tom Blunt in Marschner’s Vampyr, Henry VIII in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, Alfonso in Lucrezia Borgia, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Banco in Macbeth, Samuel in Un ballo in maschera, Father Guardian in La forza del destino, King in Aida, Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Colline in La Bohème, Prince of Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur, Wassermann in Rusalka and Said-Fares in Bernhard Sekles' rediscovered Shahrazade. He has also performed there roles in Charles Gounod's Faust (Mephisto), George Frideric Handel's Orlando, Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus), W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, G. Verdi's Rigoletto, and Ignacy Jan Paderewski's Manru, most recently appearing as Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier and Doctor Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, presenting not only his great vocal talent but also his acting talent.

Ki-Hyun Park regularly appears at the Händel-Festspiele in Halle, where he has performed in, among others, as Coralbo in Floridante, King in Ariodante, Priest in Hercules, Melisso in Alcina, Raimondo in Almira, Emireno in Ottone, Tullio in Arminio, Altomaro in Sosarme, Achilla in Giulio Cesare in Egitto and Egeo in Theseus.

Concerts have taken Ki-Hyun Park to Dublin, Seoul, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Berlin Konzerthaus, among others, with the bass parts in sacred works by J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel, Haydn, Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Charles Gounod, Johannes Brahms and Dvořák. As part of the Verdi Days at the Oper Halle in 2013, he performed the bass part in Verdi's Messa Da Requiem. In 2014, he accepted an invitation from the Oper Halle to perform G.F. Handel's Messiah in its American twin city of Savannah. A guest appearance as Mephisto in John Dew's production of Charles Gounod's Faust took him to the Metropolitan Opera Seoul in 2016.
