The French light coloratura soprano, Julie Thyana Roset, was singing almost before she was talking, and a grandmother recalled her being enrolled in a television concert by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli when she was three or four years old. Roset lived and breathed music even as a child. She began singing at the age of 6 at the Opéra d’Avignon and joined Chorale A Piacere, directed by Annie Fageau. At the age of 18, she obtained her DEM with honors with the congratulations of the jury from Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional d'Avignon (2004-2016). Introduced to Early Music by Monique Zanetti at the CNR D’Aix-en-Provence, she entered the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Early Music in Lucien Kandel's class to perfect this repertoire that is close to his heart, graduating with honors (2016-2019); and she was awarded her artist diploma in Opera Studies from the Juilliard School (2020-May 2022). In September 2016, she won several prizes at the Concours des Jeunes Talents de l’Opera d’Avignon (CFPL Prize, Audience Prize, Prize in the 19-23 year old category). In April 2022, she won 1st Place at the Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition.
In August 2017, Julie Roset sang a duet with Mariana Flores and the Cappella Mediterranea ensemble for the recording Lettera Amorosa, Monteverdi a voce Sola conducted by Leonardo García-Alarcón. She performed the role of Papagena at the Opéra de Toulon in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in December 2017. She recorded Les madrigaux d'Arcadelt with Cappella Mediterranea in February 2018, before giving them in concert in June of the same year at the Namur festival. She also sang with the Clematis ensemble Italy and the Baltic (Faebruary 2019-October 2020).
Julie Roset performed in various recitals given as part of the Haute Savoie and Geneva Baroque festivals with Cappella Mediterranea in summer 2018. Soon, she could be found in La messe de Colonna, in Ambronay and Brussels in September 2018, before performing “Acqua” in Il Diluvio Universale by Falvetti and being a soloist in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 in Versailles and Dijon in December 2018, always alongside Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo García-Alarcón.
Julie Roset made her Paris debut as Amour in Mondonville’s Titon & l’Aurore with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie at Opéra Comique (January 2021), sang Papagena in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Opéra de Toulon (December 2017), joined Les Arts Florissants and Paul Agnew as Amour in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice at the Philharmonie de Paris (July 2019) and, at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (June 2019), sang Clorinde in Il Combattimento, la théorie du cygne noir, a musical journey through the Italian Baroque conducted by Sebastien Daucé.
Already making her mark on the operatic landscape, Julie Roset recently appeared at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as both Valletto and Amore in Ted Huffmann’s inspired staging of L’incoronazione di Poppea under the baton of Leonardo García-Alarcón (July 2022), joined Sasha Waltz & Guests acclaimed production of L’Orfeo at Teatro Real Madrid as Euridice and La Musica (November 2022), and sang Amore in L’incoronazione di Poppea at Opéra du Rhin under Raphaël Pichon.
As a concert performer, Julie Roset is in high demand with recent debuts including concert performances of W.A. Mozart’s Il re pastore at the Salzburg Festival with Mozarteum Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer (August 2023), J.S. Bach's Christmas-Oratorio (BWV 248) with Stavanger Symfoniorkester under Ottavio Dantone (December 2022), Haydn’s La Création with Julie Chauvin and Le Concert de la Loge at Festival de Saint-Denis and Acis and Galatea with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Leonardo García-Alarcón (May 2022).
Julie Roset has formed strong connections with several ensembles including Leonardo García-Alarcón’s Cappella Mediterranea with whom her performances include Sacrati’s La Finta Pazza at Concertgebouw Amsterdam (December 2022 and, during her residency at the Aix Académie, she joined Ensemble Pygmalion and Raphaël Pichon for a programme of W.A. Mozart and contemporaries and she appeared as the Philistine Woman in George Frideric Handel’s Samson with CAV&MA’s Millenium Orchestra at the Beaune and Namur Festivals (September 2021).
As the Grand Winner of the 2022 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, the name of Julie Roset has rapidly become one to note and her performances as Zémire in Zémire et Azor last season at Opéra Comique (July 2023) garnered unanimous acclaim, Le Figaro writing “the young soprano catches the light with her singing as natural as it is intelligent”. In October 2022, she sang G.F. Handel's Theodora with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.
Performance highlights of Julie Roset’s 2023-2024 season include her debut at Opéra de Paris as Amour in a new staging by David McVicar of Charpentier’s Médée under William Christie, a European concert tour of Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Ensemble Pygmalion and Raphaël Pichon (December 2023), a curated programme of Baroque arias entitled Elemental with ensemble Twelfth Night at Carnegie Hall, and a staged version of Die Schöpfung at Opéra de Lorraine with Music Director Marta Gardolińska.
On disc Julie Roset can be heard in her solo recording of works by G.F. Handel entitled Salve Regina, with Millenium Orchestra and released on the Ricercar label. Other recent recordings include Sigismondo d’India’s Lamenti e Sospiri with Cappella Mediterranea on Ricercar, Brabant with Holland Baroque released on Pentatone and Dido and Aeneas with Les Argonautes released on the Aparté label.
