The German soprano, Lisa Florentine Schmalz, studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.
Lisa Schmalz lives in Hamburg and works as a singer, music theater maker and curator. Her various activities are united by her interest in and search for contemporary and female* opera creation, in which content, aesthetics and working conditions are rethought. During and after her vocal studies, engagements as a soloist brought her to stages such as the Staatsoper Hamburg, Theater Kiel, Theater Bremen and Junge Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as to international stages and festivals such as the Heidelberger Frühling with important orchestras. CD and radio recordings document her vocal work. In 2024 the debut CD of her chamber music trio with Boglárka Pecze (clarinet) and Mariana Popova (piano) will be released by Genuin.
As a performer, Lisa Schmalz has also appeared on stages such as the Thalia Theater Hamburg, Kampnagel and the Lichthof Theater. She has worked closely with directors Benjamin van Bebber, Kerstin Steeb, Vendula Nováková and Martin Mutschler for many years. Due to the growing need to create new structures and to shape things herself, Lisa is also increasingly devoting herself to initiating and curating projects. At the beginning of 2022 she completed the degree "Curating in the Scenic Arts" at the Universität Salzburg. From the 2022-2024 season, she will co-direct the Lichthof Theater Hamburg’s newcomer division We Present together with Anne Pretzsch and worked as part of the team at the Hamburg Festival of Performing Arts Hauptsache frei from 2022-2023.
Central to her work is her work in the feminist music theater collective staatsoper24, which she founded together with Pauline Jacob. In its music theater performances, exhibitions and musical radio plays, staatsoper24 blurs musical and dramatic genre boundaries and creates artistic works that remain accessible and entertaining despite their theoretical underpinnings. The projects are developed in recurring collaborations with other artists. In 2020, for example, the musical radio play Pamela’s Potentiale (WDR3) and in 2022 the musical theater evening DEIN OXY (Lichthof Theater Hamburg) were created. In 2023-2024, the co-production Curlew Love songs will take staatsoper24 and team to Theater Aachen and Stadttheater Gießen. Lisa takes on her first co-directing role here.
Lisa Schmalz is also a member of NDR Vokalensemble. She was a scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung and the Musikfonds, among others. In the years 2023-2025 she is a scholarship holder of the Akademie Musiktheater heute in the field of cultural management. |
