Olivia Schurke (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: February 28, 1996 - Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA

The American mezzo-soprano, Olivia Schurke, began her musical studies ith the violin at the early age of 3, which was her primary instrument until college. She continued her violin studies through college, where she played in St. Olaf’s Philharmonia Orchestra. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from St. Olaf College (2014-2018); and her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University (2021-2023). Among her teachers: Penelope Bitzas (current), Tracey Engleman, Anna Mooy.

Olivia Schurke based in Boston. During her studies she performed several roles with the Boston University Opera Institute, most notably Bradamante in George Frideric Handel's Alcina (April 2023), Meg in Little Women (February 2023) and Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (April 2022). She made her Symphony Hall debut as mezzo soloist for James Stephensen's Symphony No. 2 with the Boston University Wind Ensemble in April 2023. Most recently she put on "Vaterliebe", a chamber recital at First Lutheran Church of Boston which featured music by German composers spanning three centuries (June 2024). Well-versed in and as equally passionate about contemporary opera, she has performed many roles in this sphere. Most recently she covered the role of Johnna in Boston Opera Collaborative's production of Naomi in the Living Room (2024). With the Boston University Opera Institute she was featured as Isabel in La hija de Rappaccini (October 2022) and Taller Daughter in Missy Mazzoli's Proving Up (October 2021).

Olivia Schurke has worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (December 2017-December 2020); Student Services Assistant at MacPhail Center for Music (December 2018-December 2020); Community Manager at The Village Works (September 2022-May 2024); at First Lutheran Church of Boston; Graduate Assistant at Boston University School of Music (October 2021-June 2022); Development Assistant at Harvard University (since May 2024).
