The Swedish bass-baritone, Markus Schwartz, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the University College of Opera in Stockholm.
Markus Schwartz was engaged in the ensemble of the Göteborg Opera, where his roles included Masetto and Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Colline and Schaunard in La Bohème, Capellio in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Ping in Turandot, Varlaam in Boris Godunov and Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in a new production directed by Stephen Langridge.
Markus Schwartz has appeared at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Masetto in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki he has sung Rambaldo in La Rondine. He has sung Don Pippo in W.A. Mozart’s L’oca del Cairo and Papageno in Björneborg, Finland. He has sung Narbanor in Rameau's Zoroastre under the baton of Christophe Rousset and Publio in W.A. Mozart's La clemenza di Tito (2013), both at the Drottningholm Court Theatre. He has also appeared in the role of Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in Jyväskyle in Finland, with the Classical Opera Company in Ascoli Picena in Italy, at the Marlow Theatre in Canterbury, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and Buxton Festival. He has been a guest at the summer festival at the Läckö Castle; Läckö Slottsopera, where he has sung Mustafa in Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeria (2009) and Geronio in Il turco in Italia. At Folkoperan in Stockholm he has appeared as Mefistofeles in Charles Gounod's Faust (2009).
The previous season (2017-2018) began with Timur in Turandot at Folkoperan in Stockholm (October-November 2017), followed by Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola at the Royal Opera, Stockholm (November 2017-February 2018). Markus Schwartz also appeared at the Göteborg Opera, as Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia (March-May 2018). In summer 2018, he was engaged at the Drottningholm Court Theatre where he sang Vincenzo Gonzaga, the Duke in their production of The Siblings of Mantua a new opera with a merge of music by Baroque composers and newly composed material (September 2018). In 2018-2019 season, he will appear as Leporello in Don Giovanni (March-June 2019) and Schaunard in La Bohème (December 2018-March 2019), both at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.
In concert Markus Schwartz has appeared in works like J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and B Minor Mass (BWV 232), George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Stabat Mater and Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem. He has sung W.A. Mozart’s C Minor Mass with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel as well as Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in Gothenburg and Dmitri Shostakovichh’s Symphony No 14 in Falun, Sweden. |
