William Shimell (Baritone)

Born: September 23, 1952 - Brentwood, Essex, England

The English baritone, William Shimell, studied in London.

William Shimell made his debut in 1980 with Kent Opera as an Usher in Rigoletto. He sang Young Scrooge in Musgrave's Christmas Carol at Sadler's Wells in 1981, and Count Almaviva at Glyndebourne in 1984. He has sung with Opera North, Scottish Opera, the Welsh National Opera and the English National Opera, in Paris and Amsterdam, and at La Scala, where he sang Baron Dourlinski in Cherubini's Lodoiska in 1991, and Covent Garden, where he made his debut in 1985 as Schaunard, returning as Guglielmo, Albert (Werther) and the Count in Capriccio, which he also sang in San Francisco in 1990.

William Shimell's repertory includes Mozart's Figaro, Papageno, Dandini, Malatesta, Mercutio, Tomsky, Marcello, Sharpless and Nick Shadow. His incisive, flexible voice and handsome stage presence make him an ideal Don Giovanni.
