The Russian mezzo-soprano, Yulia Sokolik, Obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Singing from the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow (2016-2010); and her Master of Music degree in Opera singing from the Musikhochschule Hannover (2010-2012). She then attended master-classes with Ioan Holender, Edith Wiens, Brigitte Fassbaender, Vesselina Kasarova, Margreet Honig, Rudolf Piernay, Susanna Eken, Matthias Rexroth, Eytan Pessen and Vivica Genaux, among others. She won scholarships from the Walter- und Charlotte-Hamel-Stiftung and the Mozart Academy of the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Yulia Sokolik gained her first stage experience as Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte and Bradamante in George Frideric Handel's Alcina at the Osnabrück Theater. From September 2012 to July 2014, she was a member of the opera studio of the Bayerischen Staatsoper München, where she played the role of Page in Rigoletto, Elisabeth Zimmer in Henze's Elegie für junge Liebende, Fjodor in Boris Godunov, Zaida in Rossini's Il turco in Italia, Mercedes in Georges Bizet's Carmen and kitchen boy in Rusalka. She has worked with conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Marco Armiliato, Kent Nagano, Tomas Hanus, Maurizio Benini, Carlo Montenegro, Omer Meir Welber, Jörg Halubek, Ilia Korol and Enrico Onofri.
From August 2014 to 2018, Yulia Sokolik was engaged at the Staatstheater Oldenburg, where she shone as G.F. Handel's Serse, Rossini's La Cenerentola and Dejaneira in G.F. Handel's Hercules. Her other roles included Cherubino in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Hansel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Hippolyta in Benjamin Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream. In 2016 she made her debut as Emilia in Cesti's Betrothal in a Dream and as Smeton in Donizetti's Anna Bolena at the Oper Halle. In 2018-2019 season she appeared as a composer in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Oper Halle, as the 3rd Clock and 3rd Ghost in Krenek's " Karl V." at the Münchner Staatsoper, as Phyllis in "Lady Magnesia" at the Weinberg Festival of the Munich Kammerspiele and as Mercedes in Carmen at the Oper Leipzig.
Yulia Sokolik has been a member of the Oper Halle ensemble since August 2019. Here she was heard as the faithful soul in the G.F. Handel's Brockes Passion, HWV 48, which was released on DVD by Naxos in 2024, Riquette in Victoria and her Hussar, Medoro in Orlando, Clizia in Teseo, Hermia in B. Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream, various roles in Péter Eötvös' Golden Dragon, Maddalena in Rigoletto and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro in Bad Lauchstädt. This season (2024-2025), she will sing, among others, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Amastre in G.F. Handel's Serse and Dardano in Amadigi di Gaula, Giulietta in Hoffmanns Erzählungen, Orlofsky in Fledermaus, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel and Siebel in Charles Gounod's Faust. |
