The Baelgian bass, Philippe Souvagie, was a deserving choirboy already in the Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino in Aalst. He studied at Sint-Maarteninstituut Aalst. Meanwhile, eager to play all the percussion instruments again, with the first prize in the Nationale Muziekwedstrijd (National Music Competition; now Dexia) in 1978 as good result. Then several first prizes of percussion, singing and chamber music followed at the Conservatorium te Gent (Class of 1985). He attended master-classes and private lessons with Noèle Barker. His principal singing teachers were Luciènne Van Dyck, Louis Devos, Zeger Vandersteene and Lieve Vanhaverbeke.
Philippe Souvagie has sung countless solos for radio, TV and CD, including with the Vlaams Radio Koor, with which he has been cooperating for 28 years. His predilection for ensemble singing is a constant in his activities. At that time with the Malufi singers and now with the close-harmony group Blend and especially the ensemble Psallentes that specializes in Gregorian chant of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. He also sings in Vlaams Brussels Philharmonic & Flemish Radiochoir and is a member of Ensemble BachPlus (Director: Bart Naessens).
Philippe Souvagie also obtained the Master's degree and teaches singing at the Kunstacademie Ter Beuken in Lokeren. Hae is director on the Mannenkoor Kratzfuss in Aalst. He got married in 2011, and currently lives in Aalst, Belgium. |
