Maria Streijffert (Contralto)

Born: Sweden

The Swedish contralto, Maria Streijffert, studied at the Malmö Academy of Music and at the University College of Opera in Stockholm.

Maria Streijffert's roles have included Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Malmö Opera, Penelope in Il ritorno d’Ulisse at the Swedish Baroque Festival in Malmö, Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea with Stephen Stubbs, Erin Headly and Ensemble Tragicomedia in Malmö, Theodorine in Offenbach’s L’Ile de Tulipatan at the Norrland Opera and Zweite Magd in Elektra at the Royal Opera, Stockholm and Sonjetka in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District at the Värmland Opera.

During the summer of 2005 Maria Streijffert sang Fernando in Francesco Bartolomeo Conti’s Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena under the baton of René Jacobs at the Innsbruck Festival and the Beaune Baroque Music Festival. During the spring of 2006 she appeared as Philoktet in George Frideric Handel’s Orest at Komische Oper, Berlin, under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock, with revivals in the following seasons. In 2008 she appeared as Mrs. Quickly in Falstaff at the Stockholm Royal Opera. She returned to the Royal Opera in the 2008-2009 season as Dalila in Samson et Dalila and Erda in Siegfried. The summer of 2009 has included Erda in Das Rheingold and Siegfried as well as Rossweisse in Die Walküre at the Seattle Opera.

On the concert platform Maria Streijffert has appeared with many of the leading symphony orchestras in Scandinavia. She has sung L.v. Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Alan Gilbert in Stockholm as well as with Lawrence Renes in Stockholm and Paris. Other concert engagements have included J.S. Bach’s Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Messiah with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Sönderjylland Symphony Orchestra, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem with the Sjaelland Symphony Orchestra and J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln and Markus Stenz.
