The Australian tenor, Daniel John Thomson, graduated in 2009 his Bachelor of Music (specialising in vocal performance) with with honours in Vocal Performance from the University of Melbourne. October 2016 he received a scholarship to study a Master in Advanced Vocal Ensemble Studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, which he completed in April 2018.
Daniel Thomson is a London based tenor soloist, recitalist and chamber singer. Known for his expressive text-based performance, his focus is on historically informed performance of music from the 16th to 19th centuries. He is a core member of several groups including Dowland Works (Director: Dame Emma Kirkby), Lux Musicae London, InVocare, Sidonia Ensemble and the priory choir of St Bartholomew-the-Great and often sings chorus with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Early Opera Company, Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh) and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel. He has performed in various well-known festivals worldwide including the London Festival of Baroque Music, Utrecht Festival Oude Muziek, Brighton Early Music Festival and the MA Festival Bruges.
Back in Melbourne, Daniel Thomson regularly performed as a soloist with various choral and instrumental groups including the Consort of Melbourne, Ensemble Gombert, Ensemble 642 and La Compañia - with whom Daniel features as a guest vocal soloist on their critically acclaimed 2013 CD release “Destino Mexicano”. Daniel is also known for his performances with his identical twin brother Matthew Thomson.
In 2015 and 2016, Daniel Thomson spent a couple of months in Canada preparing a recording with rhetorical methods of interpretation under the direction of Professor Robert Toft of the University of Western Ontario. As a result of this collaboration, his debut solo album "Secret Fires of Love", released in early 2018, has been featured on BBC Radio 3 programme In Tune with Daniel as a BBC Introducing Artist.
In February 2019, Daniel Thomson made his debut performance in Wigmore Hall as a soloist and chamber singer alongside Dame Emma Kirkby for her 70th birthday celebration concert. In October 2020, he has been learning the original English pronunciation through the InVocare ensemble in collaboration with David Crystal, Peter Van Heyghen, REMA, AMUZ, BOZAR and Culture for Europe.
2022 sees Daniel Thomson performing in the UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. He is also the current tenor prize winner of the ‘Bachcelona’ Salvat Beca Bach prize, which sees him travelling to Barcelona regularly as a J.S. Bach soloist. |
