The American baritone, Peter Walker, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, Correlate Sequence Medieval Studies from Vassar College (2005-2009, 3.75 GPA, Departmental Honors); and his Master of Music degree in Opera from McGill University (2010-2012, 3.98 GPA, Schulich Scholarship). He also participated in Vancouver Early Music Festival Medieval Program, studied with Benjamin Bagby, Norbert Rodenkirchen, and Eric Mentzel (2008); San Francisco Early Music Festival Theater Project (2009, Artist in Residence Scholarship); Amherst Early Music Festival Baroque Opera Project (2008, 2009, 2012, Opera Scholarship); Queens College Baroque Opera Workshop (2012, Partial Scholarship); Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (2012, Vocal Scholarship); Staunton Music Festival (Vocal Artist Fellow, 2014). He studied with Sanford Sylvan, Drew Minter, Curtis Streetman, and Peter Harvey, among others.
Described as a “commanding” singer by a recent Boston Globe review, Peter Walker enjoys a varied career as a singer of early and classical music. Recent performances include bass solos in J.S. Bach's Cantatas BWV 36, BWV 147 and Mass BWV 236 with the Handel and Haydn Society, the title role in George Frideric Handel's Hercules with the Staunton Music Festival, the title role in Georg Philipp Telemann's Pimpinone with the Texas Early Music Project, and singing in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and London with the Clarion Society Choir, as well as appearances with Three Notch’d Road, GRAMMY-nominated Clarion Society Choir, Kuhmo Kamarimusiiki, Staunton Music Festival, Early Music New York, GRAMMY-nominated Skylark Ensemble, Blue Heron, Pomerium, Texas Early Music Project, Gotham Early Music, and Cappella Romana.
Peter Walker is a member of the storytelling and music duo Chapter House, has presented lectures on early music at Vassar College and the University of Virginia, and won the Overseas Class in the Lowland and Border Pipers’ Society Competition in 2016. He is a member of the schola cantorum at the Oratory of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and is a founding member of medieval ensemble Twa Corbies.
In addition to performing, Peter Walker is active as a researcher of early music ranging from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. He serves as an artistic advisor for Three Notch’d Road, and his transcriptions, translations, arrangements, and compositions have been performed by Three Notch’d Road, Cantata Profana, Staunton Music Festival, and GRAMMY-nominated Skylark Ensemble. |
