The American baritone, Samuel Wetzel, grew up Erie Pennsylvania on his family’s sheep ranch. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music (2018-2022), where he studied with Dr. Marc Weagraff; and his Master of Music degree Vocal Performance from University of Colorado Boulder College of Music (August 2022-2024), where he studied with Professor Andrew Garland. In 2024, he was finalist at the Young Artist Competition of Colorado Bach Ensemble in Denver.
Samuel Wetzel's has been described by Big Island Music as "Hav(ing) a resonance that (brings) the energy up from the floor throughout the theater - physically vibrating and moving the 'chi' in the room!". He has been seen most recently as Pa in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, in the 2023 CU Boulder New Opera Workshop, as Pandolphe in Cendrillon, and Marcello in La Bohème, all with Eklund Opera Theater, in addition to La bohéme (chorus) with Cleveland Opera Theater. He also recently performed Brundibar in Brundibar with Opera Steamboat. At Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music he performed Schubert’s Winterreise, The Count in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Melisso in George Frideric Handel's Alcina, Dad in Jake Heggie’s Cinderella 99, Pelléas et Mélisande (Pelléas cover), Ghosts of Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald cover), and Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas., and Igor Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress (chorus) He is involved in the production of both new and early music, Art Song, and anything that challenges the way we think about music, and takes a special interest in performing new music and the music of J.S. Bach. He is also a member of the Colorado Bach Ensemble, and engages in the creation of art song regularly, notably performing Schubert's Winterreise in recital with pianist Jason Aquila. In the fall of 2024, he is attending Indiana University Bloomington to get his P.D.S.P. in voice performance. He currently lives in Berea, Ohio. |
