Hanna Zumsande (Soprano)

Born: Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany

The German soprano, Hanna Zumsande, received her vocal training at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, where her teachers included Jörn Dopfer and Carolyn James. Since then she has enjoyed a close working relationship with Ulla Groenewold and Margreet Honig. Later she perfected her studies with Burkhard Kehring and in master-classes with Rudolf Jansen, Ulrich Eisenlohr, Axel Bauni and Anne Le Bozec. Among her many awards and distinctions are the first prize at the Handel Festival Competitions in Göttingen and Halle (2009), first prizes at the Mozart Competition of the Absalom Foundation in Hamburg and the Elise Meyer Competition (both 2010) and the audience prize from Maritim Musik (2011). She has also held scholarships from the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation and the Hermann and Milena Ebel Foundation.

A versatile and internationally acclaimed concert artist, Hanna Zumsande has worked with conductors of the stature of Hansjörg Albrecht, Pablo Heras-Casado, Marcus Creed, Thomas Hengelbrock, Wolfgang Katschner, Hermann Max, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Peter Neumann, Christoph Schoener, and Jörg Straube. Having initially acquired a reputation in early music (including works by J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann), singing with such ensembles as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburger Barockorchester, Concerto Copenhagen, Bell'arte Salzburg, Lautten Compagney Berlin, Concerto con Anima, Musica Alta Ripa, Barockorchester L'arpa festante, L'Arco Hannover, Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg, and Concerto Farinelli, she has recently expanded her concert repertoire to include the oratorios of Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms' Requiem and other works from the romantic era to the modern age. She has sung these works inter alia with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Zürcher Kammerorchester and Hamburger Symphoniker.

Concert engagements have already taken Hanna Zumsande to the Handel festivals in Göttingen and Halle, Bachfest Leipzig, La Folle Journée (Nantes), Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Wratislavia Cantans Festival, Brühler Schlosskonzerten and such leading concert halls as the Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Zürich's Tonhalle, Berlin's Konzerthaus, Hamburg's Laeiszhalle and Hamburg’s Church of St Michael, as well as Hong Kong, France, Spain, Belgium and Poland.

Besides her concert activities, Hanna Zumsande has also sung in many opera productions at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre and has made guest appearances at the Kiel Theater, the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein and the Neue Eutiner Festspiele.

Her many broadcast recordings and CD releases bear witness to her artistry, including a 2017 recording of G.P. Telemann's festive music for Altona with the Hamburg Barockwerk (CPO) and Monteverdi’s Selva morale with the Balthasar-Neumann-Chor, recorded one to a part under their conductor Pablo Heras-Casado (Harmonia Mundi). The critics waxed ecstatic at her recording of the Monteverdi Vespers with the Lautten Compagney Berlin and solo vocalists from the Ensemble Amarcord (Carus).
