History & Mission:

The biennial Bach Festival of Charleston is dedicated to celebrating the music of one of the greatest composers ever to live.
The 2013 Festival was held from March 1 through March 3, 2013, at historic First (Scots) Presbyterian Church. It included vocal and instrumental ensembles in a chamber concert; a candelight program featuring five organ concerti; and a final concert in which a fifty-five voice chorus directed by renowned conductor Stephen Stubbs presented J.S. Bach's great Magnificat (BWV 243).
The last festival on March 26, 2023 was a scaled-down one-day concert performance rather than the traditional multi-day festival.

The Mission of the Bach Society of Charleston was to enrich the Charleston community through presentation of exceptionally high-quality performances of the finest classical music in the repertoire, with special emphasis on oratorio and large choral works, world-class visiting artists, and the sacred and secular music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries from the Baroque and Early Classical periods. This Mission should be achieved through presentation of the bi-annual Bach Festival and other musical events.
The Bach Society of Charleston ceased operations around 2023.
