History & Mission:

Since 2017, the Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchengemeinde has organized the Bachfest Eisenach annually around Reformation Day. The aim is to draw regional and national attention to Eisenach as J.S. Bach's birthplace and, in particular, to St. Georgenkirche with its baptismal font. Georgenkirche is, of course, the central performance venue. In addition, other venues in Eisenach are included, and themed bus tours are offered. Besides concerts, there are cantata services, readings, lectures, and guided tours. The events are presented by Eisenach artists and ensembles (Bachchor Eisenach, Ambrosius Kammerorchester, Mitteldeutsche Barock-Compagney), regional partners (Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Eisenach, Thüringer Bach Collegium), and internationally renowned performers (Thomanerchor Leipzig, Thomanerchor Leipzig, Collegium 1704). The unique festival location and the high-caliber, diverse program attract J.S. Bach enthusiasts both in Germany and abroad. Each festival has a thematic motto.
