History & Mission:

Founded in 2002, the Montreal Bach Academy is an organization dedicated to the study, performance and celebration of J.S. Bach, the timeless genius whose innovations in composition laid the groundwork for all composers and musicians of the last four centuries. Under the direction of its founder, Dr Alexandra Scheibler, the Montreal Bach Academy presents the Montreal Bach Festival (MBF) which includes concerts, public courses given by leading musicians, and a symposium in which specialized musicologists discuss various subjects. The MBF takes place just before the holiday season at the end of November and the beginning of December.
The works of J.S. Bach are considered a model for all music composed since his time. His heritage is an omnipresent influence in all genres of performance and composition from western European traditions to jazz. The famous Bach festivals of Europe, especially those of Bachfest Leipzig and Bachwoche Ansbach, are inspiring and stimulating and have become our artistic and organizational models.
The mission of the MBF is to emphasize this heritage pursuing the highest musical standards and, fol- lowing the example of Bach, celebrating music in its largest sense. An important place is also given to the music of other composers. Thus, by its association with many ensembles and musical organizations, by its openness to all baroque and classical repertoire, the Montreal Bach Festival is undeniably a major musical event that contributes to the richness of cultural and social life in the city.
