Mathias Gastritz (Composer)

Born: c1535
Died: December 9, 1596 - Amberg, Bavaria, Germany.

Mathias Gastritz [Gastharts, Gastatz, Gastritzsch, Latin Castricius] ,) was a German organist and composer of the Renaissance. He was appointed Organist of the City of Amberg on December 22, 1561 and served for nearly 30 years. After litigation and personal insults he resigned in 1589 from the office. Among his students was probably the composer Andreas Raselius.

Mathias Gastritz's compositions are in the older motet tradition of the 16th century. They are characterized by a transparent imitation technique and syllabic text declamation; Polyphonic initial imitations usually lead to a clear, homophonic soundtrack. One of his best-known compositions is the five-part Lied Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, O Herr (Zahn 8326), set to a text by Martin Schalling (1569).
