Leberecht Herold was born the son of Johann Herold (schoolmaster in Steigra). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 15, 1748; studied there from 1748 to 1754. He died as an alumnus. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
