Introduction to BWV 90 -- Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende
Weekly reminder:
This week we continue Trinity season cantatas with BWV 90, the first of two works for the 25th Sunday after Trinity. Details of text, commentary, recordings, and previous discussion for this week are accessible via: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV90.htm
The commentary by Julian Mincham, music examples included, is especially recommended as an introduction to listening.
The BWV 90 page has convenient access to notes from the Gardiner [8], Koopman [5] (notes by Christoph Wolff), Suzuki [7], and Leusink [6] (and more!) CD issues, via link beneath the cover photo.
The chorale text and melody are accessible via links at the BWV 90 page. Francis Browne has recently added new commentary on the cantata texts to his interlinear translations, linked via [English-3I]. We can expect these to continue, not necessarily weekly. Douglas Cowling and William L. Hoffman are also posting relevant to chorales and other music for the Lutheran Church Year, accessible via LCY pages
I do not always take the time to check all links before posting. Special thanks to the folks who provide timely corrections. |

BWV 90 Chorale - illustration of Mattheson organ registrations
Following on from the Niedt/Mattheson article contributed by Thomas Braatz, I thought it might be interesting to demonstrate some of the stops that Mattheson mentions on an organ that he would certainly have known and
played. Accordingly, I use the chorale from this week's cantata for that purpose. The chorale melody is performed on the upper manual, the two inner parts on the lower manual and the bass on the pedals. The layout of stops is somewhat cryptic: the two inner columns correspond to the pedal (bass), the two outer columns to the lower manual (inner parts) and the two middle columns to the upper manual (chorale melody). In adding a stop mentioned by Mattheson, it was necessary to add suitable stops to the other parts to maintain balance.
