The Welsh soprano, Jessica Cale, grew up surrounded by music and was singing chorally from a very young age with Tempus Vocal Group and Cantorion John S Davies - two choirs that laid the foundations of her love of choral music - before being offered a place in the National Youth Choir of Wales. She read music at Cardiff University from where she graduated with a First Class Honours degree in July 2014. During her time at Cardiff University, she was awarded a scholarship for her academic performance, the Geraint Evans Prize for an outstanding second year recital, and the D J Lloyd Prize for outstanding vocal performance in her final public recital. Under the tutelage of John Hugh Thomas, she gave many solo performances with University ensembles, including two performances alongside the University Chamber Choir at Llandaff Cathedral of J.S. Bach's Wedding Cantata BWV 202 Weichet Nur, betrübte Schatten and Antonio Vivaldi's Nulla in mundo pax sincera.
Jessica Cale was a Monteverdi Choir apprentice for 2014-2015, a choral scholar at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square and is an alumnus of The Sixteen's choral training programme - Genesis Sixteen (2013-2014).
Jessica Cale is currently living and working in London studying with Julie Kennard (RAM). Since moving to London, Jessica has quickly built a successful career performing as both a soloist and an ensemble and consort singer. Jessica works with many of today's leading Baroque vocal ensembles under the batons of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Harry Christophers, Paul McCreesh and Nigel Short. Upcoming highlights for 2015-16 include UK performances with The Sixteen (Director: Harry Christophers), a USA Tour of Johannes Brahms and Bruckner with Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), and performances of J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner) across the UK and Europe.
In addition to her love of Baroque and renaissance music, Jessica Cale enjoys exploring and performing contemporary repertoire. June 2014 saw her complete the world premiere recording of Judith Weir's song cycle Really? for Cardiff University as part of a recording project of Judith Weir's music by the Contemporary Music Group under the direction of Robert Fokkens.
In 2013, Jessica Cale made her operatic debut as Elizabeth Bennett in a new opera, Pride and Prejudice, by Guy Withers performed by Cardiff University Operatic Society (CUOS). In 2014 she returned to the stage with CUOS taking on the role of Pamina in their production of W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute. |
