Steve Davislim (Tenor)

Born: 1967 - George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Died: August 11, 2024 - Vienna, Austria

The Malaysian-born Australian tenor, Steve Davislim, began his musical training as a horn player and studied voice at the Victorian College of the Arts with Dame Joan Hammod. He also studied with John Modenos Gösta Winbergh, Neil Shicoff and Luigi Alva, attended Irwin Gage's Lieder class and the International Opera Studio in Zurich. In Australia he was awarded twice the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Award and the Australia Council Overseas Study Grant.

As a member of the Zürich Opera Studio, Steve Davislim sang the roles of Narrator in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia and Filipeto in Wolf-Ferrari's I Quattro Rusteghi. In the1994-1195 Steve Davislim joined the ensemble of the Zürich Opera where he sang the roles of Almaviva (under Nello Santi), Paolino /Il matrimonio segreto, the Steersman/The flying Dutchman, Gonsalvo in Ravel's L'heure espagnole, Camille/The merry Widow (under Franz Welser-Möst), Der Prinz in Heinz Holliger's Schneewittchen, Ferrando/Cosi fan tutte and Tamino, Maler in Lulu (under Franz Welser-Möst) and Don Ottavio (under Nikolaus Harnoncourt).

As a guest Steve Davislim performed Don Ottavio in Athens, Almaviva at the Hamburg and the Berlin State Opera, Arbace in W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo with the Opéra de Lausanne, Belmonte in W.A. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Schönbrunn Festival Vienna, Tamino at the Ludwigsburg Festival 1998, Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff under Claudio Abbado in Ferrara and under Bernard Haitink in London.

As a concert singer Steve Davislim appeared with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich (L.v. Beethoven's Symphony no. 9/David Zinman), BBC Symphony Orchestra (Missa Solemnis/Roger Norrington), Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244)/Peter Schreier), L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Melbourne Symhony Orchestra, Royal Danish Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra (W.A. Mozart's Requiem/Franz Welser-Möst), Wiener Symphoniker (Michael Gielen) Dresdner Philharmonie (Johannes Brahms Rinaldo/Plasson with recording for EMI), Camerata Academica Salzburg at the Salzburg Festival and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique (Robert Schumann’s Faust-Szenen/John Eliot Gardiner) at the International Lucerne Festival, at Avery Fisher Hall New York and in London (BBC Proms), Orchestre des Champs Elysées (Haydn Die Schöpfung/Philippe Herreweghe) and Orchestre Philharmonique de Lyon (Haydn Isola disabitata/ Heinz Holliger), Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI (Torino) L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis/Lorin Maazel) and Camerata Academica Salzburg (J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244)/ Franz Welser-Möst).

Future engagements include: Orfeo in Haydn's L'anima del Filosofo in Schwetzingen, concerts under Herbert Blomstedt in Leipzig, Tom Rakwell in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Belmonte, Tamino and Camille de Rosillon in the Merry Widow in new productions at the Vienna Volksoper, Oberon in Weber's Oberon under John Eliot Gardiner at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, in Toulouse and Caen, Tom Rakwell in The Rake's Progress in Hamburg, Die Schöpfung in Bamberg, Vienna and under Thomas Hengelbrock in Schwetzingen, Weimar, Schleswig Holstein and Rheingau Festival and in Schwäbisch Gmünd, J.S. Bach's h-moll Messe (BWV 232) under Jeffrey Tate in Torino, also in Torino Franz Liszt's Faust-Symphonie under M° Ahronovich, David in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in Sydney.
