The American tenor and music pedagogue, Jean Deis, has sung leading tenor roles at a number of European and Ameican oprea houses, including the New York City Opera and the Los Angeles Opewrs. In 1967 he was appointed Professor of voice at the Indiana University School of Music. On November 4, 1987, Will Crutchfield wrote in the New York Times: jean Deis, a tenor and professor of voice at Indiana University, gave a recital at Merkin Concert Hall Monday evening that marked his return to performing after a protracted struggle with cancer. When Mr. Deis was first reviewed in these pages 31 years ago, he was praised for ''wonderfully assured upper tones,'' and he has them still. His voice sounded robust and healthy through the demanding program of Handel, Liszt (the three Petrarch sonnets), Massenet, Strauss, Puccini and David Baker (an Indiana University composer, represented by three Romantic-sounding songs). |
