The American tenor, Victor Floyd, was born to Donald and Barbara Floyd of Plainville, and grew up in Northwest Georgia - the foothills of Appalachia.. He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1982, and received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1986 from Shorter College. He was also an alumnus of Brevard Music Center and South-eastern Music Center. In 1987 he finished his first year at Indiana School of Music. While at Shorter, Floyd directed the chancel choir at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church and before going to Indiana served on the ad staff at The Calhoun Times. In 1987, he was active in the performance oriented music school in Bloomington. He was tenor soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), and gave a devotional recital at the Indiana University’s Beck Chapel. The Indianapolis Herald-Telegram called Floyd’s performance in the Bach as “brilliantly sung.” In the Indiana University Opera Theater’s 1986-1987 season, Floyd appeared in the role of Priest in Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites - an opera that centers around the struggle for religious faith during the French revolution. The opera was performed in the university’s Musical Arts Center - widely recognised as the nation’s number one conservatory/university opera house. Beverly Sills has called Indiana University’s voice faculty: “Absolutely mind-boggling.” Floyd was a student of Roger Havranek, who headed the Indiana University voice faculty. Preparing for a degree in conducting, Floyd was also a student of the international concert pianist James Tocco. He was a member of Pi Capp Lambda, a national honorary society for outstanding musicians.
Later Victor Floyd studied later at the Graduate Theological Union During the 1990’s, he worked at North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and co-moderated More Light Presbyterians of Greater Atlanta Presbytery. While attending Pacific School of Religion, Victor interned at Peninsula Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in San Mateo. He received the 2009 Marcella Althaus-Reid Award in queer theology from the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies. He trained in integrative spiritual care at the Institute for Health and Healing at California Pacific Medical Center. He joined the staff of Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco (MCC-SF) in November 2010 as part-time pastoral musician, worship co-ordinator and liturgist.
Victor Floyd is an active interdenominational presenter. Committed to inclusive language and congregational song, he recently led conferences in Montreal, North Carolina and Zephyr Cove, Nevada. Victor is an exponent of the Iona Community and InterPlay / Body Wisdom.
Victor Floyd is married to Lou Grosso. They enjoy science fiction, audio-described movies, red wine, David Sedaris and whitewater rafting. |
