The Philharmoniker Hamburg is a German symphony orchestra based in Hamburg. It was founded on November 9, 1828 as Philharmonische Gesellschaft (Philharmonic Society). In 1934 it merged with the Stadttheater-Orchester to become the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg (the name under which it recorded a celebrated Eighth Symphony of Anton Bruckner under Eugen Jochum in 1949). Today, in addition to the Philharmonic concerts at the Laeiszhalle, the orchestra plays almost all operas and ballets at the Hamburg State Opera.
The stylistic range of the 125 tenured musicians of the Philharmoniker Hamburg is unparalleled in Germany - a successful series of CD's with recordings of Bruckner's symphonies in the original version contruibuted to the reputation of the orchestra at hom and abroad. For the audience of Hamburg, the Philharmoniker Hamburg is also present in numerous performances and official ceremonies. Since August 2005, the Australian conductor Simone Young is General Music Director of the orchestra. The orchestra plays, in addition to music of modern composers like Olivier Messiaen, Tan Dun and Matthias Pintscher, in the great works of classical and romantic repertoire. |
