Hugo Hymas (Tenor)

Born: Durham, Durham, England

The English tenor, Hugo Hymas, graduated from Durham University in 2014.

Hugo Hymas now leads a freelance career as both a soloist and ensemble musician. This year (2016) he has toured J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) (Arias) with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Monteverdi Choir, performing in Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Paris (Philharmonie) and London (Barbican). He looks forward later to touring the piece with Mark Padmore and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He is also a frequent and keen performer of J.S. Bach's Evangelist roles, performing them recently in Nidarosdomen (Trondheim), Ely Cathedral and in the Varaždin Baroque Evenings festival, Croatia.

Hugo Hymas has a recording of J.S. Bach's cantatas with Sigiswald Kuijken and Trondheim Barokk, available under Chemins du Baroque label, and has performed Cantata solos recently in Snape Maltings (Britten-Pears), London (London Bach Society), and Newcastle (Newcastle Bach Choir), returning to the North East next season for J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) (Arias) in the Sage Gateshead.

Oratorio repertoire includes Berlioz' L’enfance du Christ (Narrator), Haydn's Creation (Uriel), W.A. Mozart's Requiem (tenor), Montiverdi's Vespro Della Beata Vergine (tenor), and Dvorak's Stabat Mater (tenor). Lead operatic roles are George Frideric Handel's Acis and Galatea (Acis), Semele (Jupiter), Monteverdi's L’Orfeo (Orfeo), W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (Tamino), The Marriage of Figaro (Basilo/Don Curzio), and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (Aeneas).

Hugo Hymas is a Britten-Pears young artist and was recently in The Red House (Aldeburgh) performing Benjamin Britten's Canticle I. He also works frequently with London based consorts I Fagiolini (Director: Robert Hollingworth), Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh) and Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner).
