Channa Malkin (Soprano)

Born: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Dutch soprano, Channa Malkin, graduated with honors from the Utrecht Conservatoire in 2012, where she studied with Charlotte Margiono. During her studies, she was accepted as an exchange student at the Royal College of Music in London, where she spent a semester. She has received scholarships from the Van den Ende Foundation and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds in order to further her vocal studies. In 2015, she participated in the Talent Programme of the Dutch National Opera, where she covered the role of Dalinda in Ariodante, and participated in master-classes with Andrea Marcon, Sarah Connolly, Sandrine Piau and Rosemary Joshua.

Channa Malkin made her operatic debut at the age of 16 as Barbarina in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro at De Nederlandse Opera. As a soloist Channa has sung with several orchestras, among which the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, National Radio Orchestra and Choir in Sofia, Bulgaria, Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra in New York and Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City.

Channa Malkin worked with conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Ingo Metzmacher, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Constantinos Karydis, Igor Gruppman, Vincent de Korte and Hans Leenders. Roles performed on stage include Despina in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Pamina in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Poppea in L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Charite in Cadmus et Hermione by Lully, and all female roles in Grieg's Peer Gynt, the latter with conductor Bas Wiegers and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in the Concertgebouw.

Channa Malkin's oratorio performances include J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244). The latter Channa performed most recently with Joshua Rifkin and the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra (March 2016).

Channa Malkin is passionate about art song, and regularly gives recitals in different venues in The Netherlands. Current repertoire includes Mussorgsky's Nursery in Channa's native Russian, songs by Leonard Bernstein, Francis Poulenc and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as a collection of fiery Spanish folk songs by De Falla and Garcia Lorca. At the Rotterdam Opera Days 2015, she performed a recital program around the role of women in times of war with music from the 11th until the 20th century, including George Frideric Handel's cantata Lucrezia.
