The French contralto, Joecelyne Taillon, was pupil of Suzanne Balguerie and of Germaine Lubin in Paris and won in 1966 the 1st prize at the Singing Competition of Monte Carlo.
Joecelyne Taillon became first known as a concert soprano. In 1968 she made her stage debut at the Opera House from Bordeaux in Ariane et Barbe-Bleue by Dukas. At the Opera of Geneva she appeared in Macbeth by Ernest Bloch. Then followed appearances at the Festivals of Aix-en-Provence, in Madrid, at the Opera of Nantes and in Marseille. In Madrid and in Paris she had very big successes in concerts and in Lieder recitals. In 1970 she sang at the Holland festival, in 1971 at the Festival of Glyndebourne the role of Geneviève in Pelléas et Mélisande by Debussy. In the same year she appeared as a guest at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 1971-1972 she appeared at the Festival of Salzburg in Il Sant' Alessio by Stefano Landi, in 1980-1982 she sang there in of Hoffmanns Erzählungen, in 1986 Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro. In 1973 she made her debut at the Grand Opéra Paris as Ines in Troubadour, where she then appeared as Geneviève in Pelléas et Mélisande, as Marthe in Faust, as Soeur Marie in Dialogues des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc and as Quickly in Verdi's Falstaff. In 1977 she at the Grand Opéra in performances of the Monteverdi opera L'Incoronazione di Poppea. She had a successful career also at the Opéra Comique in Paris.
In 1978-1979 Joecelyne Taillon was invited to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at which she made her debut as as Cieca in La Gioconda by Ponchielli. In the following seasons she sang there Geneviève, Anna in Les Troyens by Berlioz, Quickly in Falstaff by Verdi and Erda in Der Ring des Nibelungen. In 1983-1984 she appeared at the Grand Théâtre Geneva, in 1990 at the Festivals of Orange as Marthe in Faust by Gounod, at the Opera of Nantes in Le Roi l'a dit by Delibes, in 1991 in Pénélope by Gabriel Fauré. In 1991 she sang at the Opera of Marseille Auntie in Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten, in 1993 at the Festival Alter Musik in Innsbruck Amme in Monteverdi's Ulisse, in 1995 at the Deutschen Oper Berlin Priorin in Dialogues des Carmélites by F. Poulenc.
Recordings: On HMV she sang in in complete recording of Rossini's William Tell, Marthe in Gounod's “Faust”, Mérope in Oedipe by George Enescu, and the voice of the mother in Hoffmanns Erzählungen as well as several parts in L'Enfant et les sortilèges by Ravel. She sang Geneviève in complete recording of Pelléas et Mélisande on Eurodisc and RCA Erato; on Erato also in Pénélope by Gabriel Fauré, on Legendary Records in Incoronazione di Poppea, on Harmonia Mundi in Il ritorno d'Ulisse by Monteverdi, on Decca she can be heard in Auber's Le domino noir. |
