The French pianist, harpsichordist and composer, Orlando Bass, has a rather eclectic musical taste, leading him to many and varied activities. He is currently studying at the CNSMD in Paris, in the classes of composition (Fabien Waksman, Jean-Baptiste Courtois, David Lesczynski, Thierry Escaich, Alain Mabit), accompaniment (Jean-Frédéric Neuburger), piano (Roger Muraro) and improvisation (Jean-François Zygel).
The modern and contemporary repertoire is particularly close to his heart, and Orlando Bass performs it frequently as a soloist, chamber musician or orchestral musician, most often emphasized by a more conventional repertoire. He won the Grand Prize at the Concours-Festival répertoire pianistique moderne in April 2016, crowned with the recording of a disc devoted to the Preludes and Fugues of the 20th century, as well as the First Prize at the Concours Les virtuoses du cœur in March 2016. He is also currently working on the music of the composer-painter-engraver Michel Ciry, accompanied by a recording and an analytical memory.
On the other hand, it is on the harpsichord that Orlando Bass prefers to play the repertoire from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In November 2015, he won the First Prize at the Bologna Harpsichord Competition, Paola Bernardi Foundation. He is currently touring with Mireille Podeur a series of concerts around transcriptions for two harpsichords. They have made two recordings for the Maguelone record company, and are preparing a third.
Also improviser and composer, Orlando Bass particularly enjoys accompanying silent cinema, revisiting the soundtrack live. His catalog of works includes a Quintet with piano, a Sonata for solo violin, the Barcarolle, Cadence and Youkali for alto saxophone and piano, Strates and a Prelude and Fugue for solo piano, Prelude in imitation of L. Couperin for harpsichord alone, among other pieces for small ensemble. He currently lives in Limoges, France. |
