The Italian-Irish viola da gamba player, mezzo-soprano singer, choral conductor and music teacher, Giovanna Baviera, was born in Luxembourg. She first studied musicology at Trinity College Dublin. In 2011, she came to Basel to study viola da gamba with Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where she completed her master's degree in 2016. In order to pursue her interest in the historical art of self-accompaniment on the viola da gamba, she studied singing alongside her studies.
Giovanna Baviera works as a freelance musician since September 2011. She is active as a gambist and singer with various ensembles (Concerto di Margherita, Profeti della Quinta and Voces Suaves, and others). She mainly plays music from the 16th to the 18th century, with excursions into contemporary repertoire. Her performances take her to various international festivals and concert halls, such as Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Innsbruck Early Music Festival, Festival Ambronay, Trigonale York Early Music Festival etc. She Music Teacher at Gymboree (August 2010-August 2013). She has been Choral Director of MultipleVoice Chor in Olten since August 2014.
In February 2024 Giovanna Baviera released her first solo recording "Soloindue", a programme dedicated to the art of singing to the viola da gamba, published by Albus Fair Editions. In this album she deepens the art of self-accompanied singing on the viola da gamba. |
