The first complete new Baroque setting of Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander)'s text from 1731 was heard at the world premiere of the St. Mark Passion in March 2023.
The text is presumed to have been set by J.S. Bach for the Good Friday service at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig on March 23, 1731, with a repeat performance there in 1744 employing two additional arias and some slight changes. The music of this St. Mark Passion is believed to be lost.
On the basis of the textual sources, Nikolaus Matthes has presented the first complete new setting of Picander's text, which is simultaneously the first new setting of this text in Baroque style. Initial parts of the composition were conceived in the spring and summer of 2019. Work was resumed at Christmas in the same year, and completed at Easter of 2020.
The world premiere performances of the new St. Mark Passion took place in four Swiss cities in March 2023. The composition is realized entirely in the style of J.S. Bach's music, but is not based on existing works of J.S. Bach or other Baroque composers, with the exception of several direct quotes. This enabled audience and performers to come as close as possible to experiencing a Baroque world premiere. |
